in 1924, the first African-American student graduated from Stevens. Randolph Montrose Smith was born in Barbados in 1901 and arrived in New York City in 1903, at the young age of 2. He grew up in Harlem and came to Stevens because he wanted to be unique.
Known simply as Smith on campus, football was a favorite pastime. After graduating in 1924, he worked as a civil engineer for Manhattan's metropolitan subway system.
