Outsmarting an Upperclassman
As a Freshman, I was assigned Room 208 in Palmer Hall to share the upper bunk with Junior, Bob Polk '62. Bob was a member of Chi-Phi, so I knew I was fresh fish.
So, the 2nd or 3rd Friday evening in October of 1960, they got me!
Lying in bed around 11:00 PM, Bob came in....with half of his house! Grabbed me, threw some clothes on me (thank God) and hauled me out to their cars. They already had another Frosh, who shall remain nameless and later dropped out of Stevens.
Up we went on Route 9, I remember passing, Alpine, NJ; a few minutes later, they turned onto a long, dirt driveway going about 1/2 mile into what looked like the woods. It turns out they dropped us a a Boy Scout camp, closed for the season, and they then left.
In the dark, we walked toward where we heard traffic, and put our thumbs up. Luckily, a guy in a pick-up enroute to NYC delivering vegetable to restaurants got a kick out of it. He dropped us off at NYC Penn Station. With the 2 dollars I had squirreled in my shoe, 30 cents each got us back across the Hudson via PATH and we walked back to Palmer Hall.
You should have seen Bob's jaw drop when he got back to our room and I was already there to greet him!
