Margarita ‘Rita’ Gurevich ’06 Helps Build a Future of More Secure Data
Rita Gurevich ’06 has an eye for opportunity, and the talent to back it up.
Gurevich was a sophomore at Stevens when she landed internships at Lehman Brothers, the legendary Wall Street investment bank; she later joined Lehman full-time after graduation, and quickly ascended through the financial institution's ranks.
Two years later, Lehman filed for the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history during the financial crisis of 2008.
“It was a terrible time for so many,” she remembers. “I was put on a SWAT team that had to figure out which buying entity would get what data, since there were multiple other banks that bought parts of the Lehman umbrella. As we worked around the clock, I learned the importance of knowing your data.”
Gurevich’s entrepreneurial instincts kicked in. She began reaching out to former colleagues, offering consulting in helping banks understand what data they had and the controls around it.
“Everyone talks about data breaches now, but I was dealing with it before it was cool,” she says. “I learned all about data during this time, and saw so many companies needed help understanding their data. I kept at it, secured my first client, and things took off.”
Today her company, SPHERE Technology Solutions, offers data security solutions to Fortune 100 companies worldwide. SPHERE was recognized in the 2016 Deloitte Fast 500 and Inc. Magazine’s Inc. 5000 fastest growing companies. Gurevich received Stevens’ 2017 Young Alumni Achievement Award, and is also part of EY’s Winning Woman Entrepreneur community of successful female leaders.
